Aggressive driving has become a serious problem on our roadways. A majority of drivers of all ages admit to speeding at least eight of ten younger drivers report speeding at least monthly on each road type. Six in ten drivers age 65 or older report speeding on all road types. Below are some facts about the dangers of speeding.

• Slowing down in residential and school areas saves lives. In 2007, children age 15 and under accounted for 18% of the pedestrian fatalities.

• Speeding was a factor in 30% of the fatal crashes that occurred on dry roads

• In 2007, 34% of crashes that occurred on wet roads was caused by speeding.

• In 2007, 55% of the fatal crashes that occurred when there was snow or slush on the road were caused by speeding and 57% of those that occurred on icy roads.

• Speeding was involved in nearly one-third (32%) of the fatal crashes that occurred in construction/maintenance zones in 2007.

• In 2007, 88% of speeding-related fatalities occurred on roads that were not Interstate highways.

• Only 12% of speeding-related fatalities occur on Interstate highways.
