Brent McKinney, the executive director of the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation, was recognized by state officials earlier this month for outstanding service to public transportation in North Carolina.

McKinney was presented the 2008 Governor's Public Transportation Award during the N.C. Public Transportation Association conference that was held in Wilmington last week. The award, first given in 1988, is presented annually by the N.C. Department of Transportation's Public Transportation Division.

As city traffic engineer for the city of Winston-Salem in the 1980s and Winston-Salem's director of transportation in the 1990s, McKinney was among the early advocates for the Authority, based in Greensboro.

PART was created by the General Assembly in 1997 to find solutions for highway congestion and other traffic problems in the Triad. So far 10 counties are members. McKinney became the authority's executive director in 2001.
